Spring in the Garden

The time for fresh new beginnings.

We love Spring! As things begin to grow, you can trust Lush to ensure that your plants and trees are at the peak of health, and have the best chance of bringing you joy and beauty while you spend your time outside in your garden.

Deer

It’s Spring! Plants are leafing, flowers are blooming and deer are eating them all!

This is a great time of year to think about planting specimens the deer don’t love and protect those they do. We can help you by identifying deer-damaged specimens and providing solutions to help them survive and thrive, or replace them with less palatable offerings.

Weeding

The winter gives us a brief reprieve, but now is the time to get on top of the weeds and the earlier we get them, the less chance they’ll have of spreading, going to seed and choking out your plants.

Weekly and bi-weekly visits from our gardeners are a great way to keep your gardens in tip top shape.

Mulching

If you didn’t mulch in the Winter, now is the time! Keep down the weeds, protect from erosion due to heavy Spring rains and amend the nutrients in the soil.

Fertilizing

Early Spring is a great time to fertilize shrubs, trees, bulbs and perennials to give them that extra boost they’ll need to keep looking their best throughout the growing season.

and Pruning

Any early Spring-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering can be deadheaded and pruned if needed. Perennials can also be deadheaded as well as Spring-flowering bulbs that have run their course.

Planting

Once the frost is gone for good, planting can get underway. This is a great time for planting while the temperatures are still nice and cool and plants have time to establish their root systems before any heat waves.

This is also the time to get those fall flowering bulbs in the ground.

Hedging

Broadleaf evergreens, such as Boxwood, like to be trimmed when there’s no chance of frost damage. Pruning after they get their new Spring growth makes for a clean trim.
